2016 Reading Challenge: Weeks 34 and 35

I've been doing some off-list reading, so I didn't have anything to add to the challenge list last week. This week, however, I finished up a book for week 47: A book with a food or drink in the title.  I picked up Blood Orange by Karen Keskinen and zipped thru it.  If you are a fan of mystery writers like Sue Grafton, you'd probably enjoy this one.  It is not, however, a "cozy mystery".  I personally enjoyed it.  The characters were well-developed and there were good plot twists to keep you turning pages.  I'll probably read book #2 in this series at some point.

This week, I'm re-reading some of Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael mysteries, as our library has all of those as ebooks.  I have The Rosie Project for week #20 (a book with a first name in the title) on hold, so when that's available, I'll snag it.

2016 Reading Challenge: Week 33

I finished up The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova for week #45: A book related to a hobby or passion you have.  A lot of you probably know one of my undergrad degrees and my Master's degree are in American History, and I read enough historical fiction that was probably a big hint that I love history. This book was an interesting premise and reminded me a little bit of A Discovery of Witches but the pace was S.L.O.W.  This one could have used a lot of editing and it would have been a better read. So... I skimmed thru some of the "primary source" passages which didn't lend a lot to what we already knew, and enjoyed the parts with action and intrigue.

I also read The Dark Lantern this week, for week #33:  The 16th book on my Goodreads to-be-read list.  This one was also kind of a slow read for me for a different reason - I think it needed a little more front-end of the story.  There were several intertwined stories in this late 19th century mystery of misplaced identity and a whole snare of lies told amongst the people living in the house (gentry and below the stairs in equal measure).  It took me a while to get into this one, but the last 4 or 5 chapters made it worth it as I was anxious to turn the page and find out what was the ultimate fate of the mistress of the house and the second maid.

I'm waiting on a couple of books on hold from the library before I decide what I'll read next for this week.  Stay tuned.

2016 Reading Challenge: Week 32

I finished reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky for week #11 (a book from the Rory Gilmore challenge).  Definitely not a favorite of this year's reading group.  Too much teenage angst.  I am glad now I didn't also see the movie as I can't imagine I'd have liked it either.

I also read The Lazarus Gate by Mark Latham as week #22's "First book in a new-to-you series."  A fun, entertaining read.  Lots of suspension of disbelief albeit wrapped in an appealing package.  This one combines late 19th century history, a retired military man, some Dr. Who-vian time warping, a parallel universe and all sorts of adventure.  You kind of have to read it to see how he pulls all of this together.

I then started The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.  An interesting premise involving some ancient books and old letters - I suspect I'm going to agree with my friend, Christine's, review that this one could have used some editing.  The story concept is good - but every time I look at the percentage read, it doesn't seem to be increasing very much.  Slow going, but I'm invested now, so I'll try to finish this one up this week.
